Nature’s intended diet

Naturally, wood pigeons live in woods as their name suggests, eating a varied diet of berries, tender shoots, grains and nuts. But in today’s landscapes that is not necessarily the case…

Access to crops

With modern agriculture wood pigeons have unlimited access to vulnerable crops such as spring and autumn drilling of wheat, barley, oats, maize, mustard, rape seed, sunflowers, luzerne, clover, cabbages, peas, beans, etc.

They also get stuck into laid crops from strong winds and rain. This steals directly from the farmers and their harvest.

Population

With this much food available, and a year round breeding cycle, pigeons have become one of the most prolific agricultural pests of British crops.

Crop Protection

Our job at Chiltern Sporting is to liaise with farmers and land owners to find out where and when the pigeons are moving to offer you the best opportunities to face these quick, wild and agile birds. It is however, impossible to say how many you might be able to shoot as well as how many cartridges you may need.

Not everybody has land to shoot on and farmers can sometimes have a hard time finding reliable volunteers to defend their livelihood, this is where we can offer a sustainable cycle.

Currently in the England we can shoot pigeons (and corvids) to protect and prevent damage to crops all year round, though there are favorable.
